Meet Jan Lanier
RN & Candidate for State Representative in Ohio’s 2nd District

Janice K. Lanier is a wife, mother, grandmother, registered nurse, and an attorney whose practice at Squire, Sanders & Dempsey in Columbus focused on health care issues. Lanier graduated from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing (Springfield, MO) in 1966.

the past 25 years, Lanier has worked in and around state government. She was the associate executive director of the Ohio Board of Nursing for seven years before becoming the director of health policy for the Ohio Nurses Association (ONA). Currently she is the deputy executive officer for ONA. Lanier’s experience and advocacy on behalf of nurses, the nursing profession, and the patients nurses serve enable her to have knowledge of some of the most complex governmental systems that affect the residents of Delaware County on a daily basis, without being a career politician.

“One of the biggest challenges facing elected officials is health care access and affordability,” stated Lanier. “We must elect people to the Ohio House of Representatives who have expertise essential to the development of creative and effective solutions to the growing problem. As a registered nurse, I am uniquely qualified to do that and more,” she noted.

Although Jan has never before sought political office, she has a wealth of experience in and around state government that will serve the residents of Delaware County well. Most recently she was named by Governor Ted Strickland to assist the Turn Around Ohio Transition Team. In that capacity she prepared a report on the nurse shortage that became the blue print for the administration’s efforts to address this critical health care issue. She also served as an alternate representative to the Bureau of Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH) Study Committee created in the 2005 state budget to recommend sustainable funding strategies for this important program. Former Governor Richard Celeste named her as the executive director of the Governor’s Task Force on Adolescent Sexuality and Pregnancy, and she served as a member of the Medicaid Managed Care Committee in the late 1980’s. Over the years she has worked with a variety of state agencies on numerous issues related to patient safety, consumer-directed care, and higher education. Prior to coming to the Ohio Nurses Association, she was the associate executive director and interim executive director of the Ohio Board of Nursing. Jan is a member of the American Nurses Association, Ohio Nurses Association and Mid Ohio District Nurses Association; the Ohio State Bar Association; and AARP.
